UK Restaurant-Style Chili Paneer (Wok fried or Air - Fried)

UK Restaurant Style Chili Paneer is a recipe that everyone craves if you are bought up in the UK eating it. It is very different from what you would eat in India. In this recipe, there is no cornstarch slurry used and instead, the wok-fried, fried, or air fried paneer cubes are tossed with only sauces used in the recipe. You can make the dish as healthy as possible by using Airfryer to cook the Paneer or Oven and use less quantity of sauces listed in the measurements. You can also use Tofu instead of Paneer in this recipe.

Ingredients:

  • Paneer Cubes (2cm)- 2 1/2 cups or 450 grams
  • Cornstarch - 2 tablespoons
  • Rice Flour - 1 teaspoon
  • White or Black pepper powder - 1 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt to taste
  • Onions diced or julienne cuts - 1/2 cup
  • Bell peppers (colored - optional) diced or julienne - 1/2 cup
  • Green Onions (Spring Onions) finely chopped - 1/4 cup
  • Finely chopped Garlic - 4 tablespoons
  • Finely Chopped Ginger - 2 tablespoons
  • Long slits Green Chillis (Serrano or Fresh Jalapeno) - 4
  • Dark Soy Sauce - 3 tablespoons
  • Red Chilli Sauce - 1 tablespoon
  • Green Chilli Sauce - 1 tablespoon
  • Tomato Sauce - 1 tablespoon
  • Finely chopped cilantro - 2 tablespoons
  • Shredded Lettuce to serve
  • Oil - 4 tablespoons

Method/Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix cornstarch, rice flour, black or white pepper, oil (1 tablespoon), and salt. Add paneer to the mixture and ensure it coats evenly.
  2. If using Air -Fryer, preheat for 5 minutes and then drop the Paneer cubes into the Airfry and cook on highest temperature until they are golden brown in color. it will take about 10 to 20 minutes. Keep turning them around after every 5 minutes.
  3. If frying in the large wok, heat 3 tablespoons of oil and add the paneer and fry until they are crispy and golden all over. Remove with a slotted spoon and place it on a kitchen paper.
  4. In the remaining oil, add Garlic, ginger, green chili, 3/4 of spring onions, onions, peppers, and saute for 2 to 3 minutes on high flame.
  5. Now add all the sauces and saute for a minute or two.
  6. Finally, add the paneer and toss well to combine with sauces and veggies.
  7. Serve with shredded lettuce and garnish with green onions and cilantro.

Notes:

  • If you are using a store-bought paneer, place the cubes in boiling water for 10 to 15 minutes. Drain the water and place it on kitchen paper for 5 minutes. These Steps add moisture to the paneer cubes so that they are soft inside and not dry and hard.
  • You can also deep fry the paneer cubes to obtain a more authentic restaurant-style taste. Ensure you fry on medium to high heat.
  • Can use light soy sauce instead of dark soy sauce.
